A hole of great importance…

The latrine hole is DUGE! Now it needs to be covered so that when I rains it will not fill in. Monday and Tuesday the guys would like to work on sealing the hole. Then April 1st the guys will be given a small vacation for Easter.

To help us finish the latrine we will need $1,500 US to purchase the cement to seal the hole and then put a roof on it.

An education in WATER…

When everyone around you in great necessity of WATER how do you share some of what you have been given?

9,000 gallons is a lot of water. Samuel designed a lock box for the water tap.

This way water can be shared and not taken and still be enough for the trees.

a hope and a future...

Yesterday Manis sat down with some of the guys who are working on the land. They are still digging out the latrine and just finished preparing the land for the time when it DOES rain. Manis asked the guys what they wanted out of life. Their response was to learn how to live a better life and not just to learn things in a class room but to learn things from older and wiser people.

Developing the land is only a part of the work. Nothing happens quickly and the guys working with Samuel are also learning things that will give them a better quality of life.

80 plus years Grann has lived here on the Plateau.

She has seen years of plenty and years of want. For Grann, hope returned when she saw her grandson return to the Plateau with a message that God had not abandoned them. The changes that happened after Manis moved here were significant.

NOW IT WAS TIME for Grann to see Samuel’s land!!!

“The LORD has given me the strength to walk today and so I will go”, she told us. Her legs took her the distance to the land and as she entered the gate a smile crossed her face.

When she saw Samuel they sat together on the porch of the water house and talked. She told Samuel that now he will always have a place to return to.

May they all see that they have a place to come back to, where life has returned and where they know that God has NOT ABANDONED THEM.

Coming together…

Every Monday morning Samuel meets with the development staff to share with them the goal for the upcoming week. The guys working on the land are a part of this weekly meeting.

The work on the cistern will stop till we have the funds to put on the roof. Right now it’s a HUGE help for the guys to have access to water to water the trees.

This morning the tap was turned on!!!

Last night at 9:15PM Samuel took the water truck to the land and put WATER in our NEW CISTERN!!!

More water was just pumped up to the cistern!

Samuel’s Father, Mother, and brother Joel are here for the month. Four others of Samuel’s friends are here to help with a project for the church.

The guys ALL came to work today!!!

Yesterday I, Bonita was handed a few a receipts to pay. As I looked over our books it was telling me that we had NO MONEY LEFT? Discouraged I called Samuel to tell him where we were at. We shared with Rick, a friend of ours from Wisconsin and he reminded us to trust God with our need. He prayed right then with us. We then shared the news with Manis and he told us the same thing…to trust God with this need.

Manis went over to the land and informed the guys the situation. One of the men shared that he had some bags of cement at his house that we could use to finish the cistern. The guys then shared that tomorrow they would come back to work tomorrow with no pay.
Seeing the guys’ response to this situation really touched all our hearts and showed us they were behind this vision 100%!

I, Bonita was not satisfied with what the books were saying. I went back over every receipt and every entry and re-entered some of the figures. After hours of work, I looked at the TOTAL REMAINING and there was money! I don’t know what made the change in the end but I can say God allowed it to happen!
So we have some money to keep working and we are amazed at how God worked in this situation.

The guys all came to work today!

9 little seeds she took...

Everyone must do their part...

I, Bonita Sparling have been helping Samuel's Trees in the area of communications and finances. Last week I realized that I too need to do my part in planting trees.

When Phil Snyder came to visit us he introduced us to a new tree to this area. The Moringa Stenopetala is from Africa and can grow with very little water. The tree itself holds so much water, when it does rain, it can last for the year. The soft wood is no good for making charcoal so it won't be cut down. The benefits are leaves that are high in nutrience and protean and the seeds, when eaten can give you energy.

SO today I panted 9 little seeds. My goal is to plant at least 500 in our area but will start with 9.

With all the extra work we have had on the land 7 extra men have found work!

Yesterday the floor was poured for the cistern. Today the walls are going UP!

We enjoyed the visit from the Baker family yesterday. They are working in a community 45 min. from here.

Learning as we go…

This past weekend Ben Loyer came for a visit. Ben worked in Haiti back in the 70’s and 80’s. His knowledge of agriculture and irrigation is extensive. He sat with us on the land for hours and shared ideas off how we can further improve the land. The struggles we face here are extensive but we are convinced there are solutions.

We continue to persevere with the water cistern.

The guys are also preparing the land for the CHANCE of rain!
